YMCA Cheltenham’s annual BIG Shelter Build challenge set a new record, with 64 primary school children, 6 homeschooled children, and 19 pre-schoolers taking part in the event on Friday 24th April. Held at the YMCA Cheltenham Sports Centre and Cherry Blossom Pre School, the event offered a unique opportunity for children to learn about homelessness in their community, understand the challenges people face, and find out more about the services we provide as a charity. Our BIG Shelter Build is designed to empower young people to connect with their community, encouraging empathy and understanding from a young age.
Throughout the session, children had the chance to use their creativity and problem-solving skills by designing and building cardboard shelters. Collaborating with local construction firms, students from schools across Gloucestershire gained practical experience with basic construction techniques. Teachers and parents praised the event as a ‘real-life’ learning opportunity, combining education with social responsibility.
Cheltenham’s Mayor, Councillor Dr. David Willingham, attended the event and talked to the children about their projects, praising their hard work. He recognised their dedication to helping others and their impressive skills in design and technology. His encouraging words emphasised how the event is helping to build a sense of community.
The event was covered by BBC Points West, BBC Radio Gloucestershire, BBC Radio Wiltshire, Heart FM, Cotswold Radio and Greatest Hits Radio.
YMCA Cheltenham’s BIG Shelter Build Challenge goes beyond just being an event. It is a powerful initiative that unites children, parents, teachers, and community leaders with a common goal of empathy, education, and action.
